lettera ai nostri futuri compagni di casa

Dear Andrea and Pablo,

Today I'm writing in English because I'm too lazy to type and Michael is doing it for me.
The situation is more complex than expected. we lost the apartment in Salamanca because I still haven't signed my work contract and the owner refused any negotiation. On Monday we saw 3 horrible apartments and 1 that wasn't bad but only had one double room. Tonight we are going to see two more.
We discovered that many landlords want this thing called "aval bancario" which basically means an x-amount of money gets frozen in your account (for example 6 months worth of rent which the landlord can take should there be any problem with the payment). This aval thing can only be done with a Spanish account which seems very difficult to get if you don't have a NIE (numero di identificacion del extranjero) or a passport "and" a work contract in Spain.
We have applied for the NIE but we'll only have an appointment to start the process on the 18th of September and it seems I will sign my contract at the end of September.
This afternoon we will try one more bank to see if we can interrupt this vicious circle.
We can't guarantee that by the time you get here we will have found something. At the moment we are staying in a (hostile) hostal in the centre which is expensive for what you get and has no kitchen to cook in. I would recommend you look for a cheap hostal or an "estudio" you can rent per day/week/month. The cheapest hostals we found were about 45 euros a night, but who knows what they are like. If we have to stay longer than Saturday we will switch to that option.
We are not giving up just yet.
We look forward to seeing you very soon.

Love,
Shanti via Michael
