On Sunday evening we went for a walk around the center. A group of adults and children had assembled in one of the main squares. We came closer to take a look and saw two clowns enternaining the crowd. Both had white faces but only one wore a red nose. The noseless one was the orator, the more rational type who kept an eye on his friend who liked to do naughty things when his friend's back was turned. The shorter one spoke without using the letter 's' which apparently is a clear sign of the person's latin or south american origins. Both the adults and the children were entertained by the jokes, mimes and acrobatics of the pair (they used a mono cycle). I really enjoyed myself because I could understand everything (yes I have the Spanish level of a 4 year old!). Two nights before we had been to a gay bar/club for a comedy night and I was completly lost. I could understand a few words here and there but not even the general meaning. I then got distracted by the men kissing and hugging around me. It did take me half an hour though to figure out I was in a gay bar.
The clowns were exactly at my mental and Spanish level and I was happy to give them a little money at the end of the show. The very next night we went for our almost regular nightly beer in the center and saw some of our classmates on the steps of Plaza Canadio. As we sat down, I noticed that the two clowns were sitting in the midst of the people. They looked different of course without their make-up and interestingly, the one who spoke the most during the show was the most silent of the two. By chance, they had also met another clown from their city in Argentina who was also spending the summer months working around Spain. They always live in summer as they spend the warm half of the year in Spain and then return to Argentina for the other warm months. One of them told me he didn't own winter clothes anymore as he had given them all away to friends. All three of them were so sweet and enteraining we took an instant liking to them. They are staying until Saturday or Sunday but their plans seem pretty open. They don't make much money of course, but more then they would in Argentina. Leo (the one with the red nose) told me that when the time comes to ask for a little money at the end of the show in Argentina, some people pull out their empty pockets and say that they have loved the show and would like to participate but can't. He said some of them don't even have money for the bus to go home, they go walking.
